My name is Maddison and I am an eleven year old girl.I am enjoying my business and economics class so far this year as it isn’t boring like English and Maths. We talk a lot about buying things and I love shopping!Shopping with my Mum on the weekend is one of my favourite things to do.I’d never really thought too much about who makes the things I buy or how much they cost.Mum loves shopping too so she never complains about the price! When we first starting talking about entrepreneurs, I didn’t even know what the word meant. The teacher explained that it was someone who started a business and tries to make money out of it.The more I thought about it and learnt about what an entrepreneur does, the more I thought that I might like to be one!I could sell stuff that I like and make more money to go shopping with. After a couple weeks of talking about entrepreneurs in class, the teacher said that we were all going to become entrepreneurs – I was so excited! She said it was going to be marked for our report card though – I’m not as excited about that.I’m going to try really hard though so I can be rich when I grow up. At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher split us up into groups of three.I was really annoyed because I didn’t get to work with my friends.I don’t really have much in common with the people I have to work with but the teacher said we couldn’t change groups. The teacher got us to sit in our groups and watch these videos on the computer. The teacher said they were videos of interview with entrepreneurs. She said we had to take notes as we watched them and list all the things that the people said about entrepreneurs and any stuff about how we become an entrepreneur.I didn’t really like the first video.I didn’t know who the man was and I think he was talking about cars and it was boring. The second video was so good though! The man that own the Virgin planes talked about he started his business when he was young and why he keeps working. We flew on a Virgin plane on our last holiday so I liked that I knew who he was.He told me that I should make a business selling things that I like but I have to make sure other people like them too.I really liked listening to real people rather than the teacher talking. My group had a really big list of ideas after we watched the video. We thought we had everything on it.But then we did a mind map with the teacher and the other kids came up with really good ideas that we hadn’t written down! The teacher said she’d put all the ideas together on the assignment webpage. She has used an assignment webpage for our class before and we all really liked it because if we forget something, we can go onto it at home and still do our homework rather than getting yelled at the next day for not doing it. In the next lesson, we had to all go on and start out Wiki page. When we were first taught how to use Wikis, I found them really hard and I didn’t really understand why I just couldn’t use paper. But then we were doing an assignment in Geography and my friend and I had just put all our notes in her book but then she lost her book and we had to start all over again! It was so annoying and I realised that by having it online, we can make sure we always have it plus we can both do our homework and put stuff on the page rather than wasting time copying into different books the next day.The teacher reminded us that we have to make sure we are careful when we use anything on the internet as you never know who you could be talking to.She also told us that we can’t steal people’s ideas and that she would be checking our work to make sure we weren’t. In this lesson we had to talk about the assignment question in our groups and come up with all the parts we had to do.I didn’t agree with some of the things my group said so I had to build up the courage and speak up and tell them why.It turns out they didn’t agree with some of the stuff I said either but we talked about it and worked it out.I think that they might be OK to work with. As we thought of ideas, we put them into our Wiki page rather than on paper.Once we had some good ideas on there, we moved them around to group stuff that was similar so we could see what else we needed to work out.The part I’m most excited about is coming up with the product!I’m going to think about the stuff I love buying and try and make it better! In the next lesson, the teacher said she had a surprise for us!I was excited – we have all of our economics and business lessons in a computer lab and the teacher always seems to have fun new things for us to try out.The teacher said we would be talking to entrepreneurs that live in our area and we could ask them anything we wanted! The teacher said she would be keeping a close eye on our phone calls though so she could look after our safety because we were talking to people who weren’t at the school.Using a video call was so cool because it felt like we were really there talking to them, except we weren’t!It’s amazing that we can actually talk to a real-life entrepreneur from our classroom. I had the BEST idea for a product.I want to sell cat shaped pencil cases!I love cats and I love pencil cases and I can never find a good pencil case with a cat on it.Luckily my group thought it was a good idea too so we started to think about our business plan that goes along with it. My group had so much fun making the cartoon to go with our survey! We got to have lots of fun with colours and moving objects and music. The teacher said we had to make sure we included all the information about our products so that people could tell us whether they would buy it.I hope they will buy it!It’s so cool to be able to just email everything out and get an answer back.My group and I found it a little bit hard to put the survey together at first but we worked together to work it out.I sent our email to my Mum and she said she couldn’t believe how creative we were and how professional it was! The teacher said that once we get the results back, we have to finish off our assignment and then we are going to make a video that we can send to the entrepreneur we spoke to at the beginning of the assignment time.Imagine if he loves my idea and I get to sell my cat shaped pencil cases! It would be a dream come true.
